I dug into the depths of my hobbies and study findings as I started to design my immersive experience. Inspired by films like "Black Swan" and "A Beautiful Mind," I wanted to create an immersive experience that not only engaged spectators but also examined problems linked to mental health. This is how the idea came to be.
The beginning of this idea stemmed from my research on anhedonia and its correlation with a preference for dark and unsettling film themes. I discovered that individuals with anhedonia often find solace and engagement in narratives that delve into the complexities of the human psyche, even if they are dark or unsettling in nature. Moreover, I stumbled upon insights suggesting that filmmakers often channel their own struggles with depression into their creations, resulting in films with deep emotional resonance and dark thematic elements.
Drawing from these insights, I realised the potential of creating an immersive experience that not only catered to the preferences of individuals with anhedonia but also served as a therapeutic outlet for those struggling with depression. By immersing participants in a narrative that mirrors the internal struggles of characters dealing with mental health issues, I aimed to provide a space for reflection and empathy.
The immersive experience will centre around a woman grappling with schizophrenia, whose reality becomes increasingly distorted as she descends into a state of paranoia and delusion. Echoing the narrative arcs of "Black Swan" and "A Beautiful Mind," the story will navigate the blurred boundaries between reality and hallucination, inviting participants to experience the visceral terror and psychological turmoil firsthand.
In contrast to traditional film-viewing experiences, an immersive experience offers a heightened sense of engagement and immersion. By placing participants directly within the narrative environment, surrounded by sensory stimuli such as ambient lighting, spatial audio, and tactile sensations, I want to evoke a deeper emotional response and connection. Through this multi-sensory approach, participants will not only witness the character’s journey but also inhabit her reality, experiencing the highs and lows of her mental state in a visceral and impactful manner.
In essence, my immersive experience seeks to bridge the gap between entertainment and empathy, offering a transformative journey through the darkest parts of the human mind. By using the power of storytelling and immersive design, I hope to create an experience that not only entertains but also enlightens, evoking understanding and empathy for individuals grappling with mental health challenges like anhedonia and depression.
