This week’s peer review session was incredibly insightful and left me feeling more focused on my project direction. During the session, we each discussed where we were in our projects. It was eye-opening to see that while the other girls had already started planning their final pieces, I was still grappling with how to put mine together and where to even start.
After my conversation with Ben, I felt a lot clearer on the direction I wanted to pursue. Ben’s feedback helped solidify my desire to create an immersive experience rather than a subscription box. The idea of a subscription box, while interesting, seemed too complex and challenging to implement effectively. On the other hand, creating an immersive experience opens up many avenues for innovation and creativity, making it a more feasible and exciting project.
The girls and I chatted about how I would present my final piece. We brainstormed various ideas, and I am now considering a format that combines film and immersive elements. This approach would not only showcase the immersive experience but also tell a compelling story through the medium of film.
Immersive experiences show a remarkable capacity to captivate audiences on various sensory levels, resulting in a deeper and more lasting impact compared to conventional media formats. They have the ability to transport viewers into different worlds, immersing them in the story and making them feel like active participants. This is accomplished by utilising various sensory inputs, such as visuals, sounds, touch, and even smells, to create a complete and engaging experience.
One of the key reasons I believe an immersive experience would be more effective than a subscription box is its potential for emotional engagement. Immersive experiences can evoke strong emotional responses by making the audience feel connected to the narrative on a personal level. For example, motion-enhanced seats can make viewers feel as if they are moving along with the action on screen, while sensory effects like wind, rain, and scents can further enhance the realism and emotional depth of the experience.
In contrast, a subscription box, while intriguing, lacks the immediate and visceral impact of an immersive experience. Subscription boxes are limited to the physical items they contain and the delayed gratification of receiving a new box periodically. They do not provide the same level of real-time engagement and emotional connection that an immersive experience can offer. Additionally, the logistical challenges of creating and maintaining a subscription box service are soemwhat significant, especially considering the need for consistent quality and the complexity of distribution.
During our discussion, the girls were very supportive and offered valuable suggestions on how I could structure my final piece. One idea that stood out was creating an immersive film experience that guides viewers through the immersive elements while also being a standalone film. This dual approach would allow me to showcase the immersive aspects in a narrative context, making the experience more cohesive and engaging.
Immersive experiences can also cater to a wider range of audiences, including those who might not be interested in a subscription service but are eager to experience something new and exciting. The flexibility and adaptability of immersive experiences make them suitable for various settings, from dedicated 4D cinemas to pop-up installations and virtual reality platforms.
By focusing on creating an immersive experience, I can use my skills and interests in film and graphic design to develop a project that is both innovative and impactful. This approach aligns with my goal of exploring how film and design can address issues of disconnection and mental health, creating a sense of empathy and connection through a shared sensory experience.
In conclusion, this week’s peer review session was incredibly beneficial in helping me clarify my project direction. The discussions and feedback I received have reinforced my decision to create an immersive experience rather than a subscription box. I am excited to move forward with this concept and look forward to developing a project that not only captivates audiences but also provides a meaningful and emotionally resonant experience.
