Pipilotti Rist
As discussed with Ben I looked into Pipilotti Rist, a Swiss visual artist known for her immersive multimedia experiences and installations. What resonated with me was her ability to engage the senses and evoke emotional responses .Looking at her work I can see that she often incorporates elements of video, sound, light, and sculpture to create captivating environments that envelop audiences in a multisensory experience.
I liked the dreamlike characteristics and aesthetics of her installations and she uses vibrant colours and playful imagery that help the viewers to interact in an intuitive way, Her use of video projections on unconventional surfaces, such as walls, ceilings, and floors, creates a sense of immersion and disorientation, blurring the boundaries between physical and digital space.
Her approach to sensory experiences aligns with the intentions for this project which seeks to enhance emotional engagement and sensory resonance for those with anhedonia. By drawing inspiration from Rist's innovative use of multimedia elements and immersive storytelling techniques, I can explore ways to design film experiences that stimulate the senses and evoke emotional responses from viewers. This may involve incorporating elements such as dynamic lighting, spatial audio, tactile props, and interactive installations to create a more engaging and immersive cinematic experience for individuals with anhedonia.

Olafur Eliasson – The Weather Project, 2003
The Weather Project, an art installation at the Tate Modern in London 2003 featured a large-scale installation in the museum's Hall, where Rist transformed the space into an immersive environment that simulated the experience of a sunset.
The installation included a giant semi-circular screen suspended from the ceiling, onto which Rist projected a video of a swirling, kaleidoscopic sun accompanied by ambient music. The floor of the Hall was covered in a reflective surface, creating the illusion of a horizon, while mist machines dispersed a haze throughout the space to further enhance the atmospheric effect.
This project demonstrates how art can create immersive sensory experiences that engage viewers on a deep emotional level. Rist's installation used light, sound, and space to evoke feelings of awe, wonder, and introspection, drawing visitors into a mesmerizing environment that encouraged contemplation and reflection.
Similarly, my project aims to enhance emotional engagement and sensory resonance for individuals experiencing anhedonia by creating film experiences that stimulate the senses and evoke emotional responses. Drawing inspiration from installations like The Weather Project, I can explore how to design film experiences that use multimedia elements and immersive storytelling techniques to create a more engaging and immersive cinematic experience for viewers.
"Sleep No More"
This groundbreaking immersive theater experience takes inspiration from Shakespeare's "Macbeth" but transforms it into a completely unique and interactive production. This project aligns with my own personal objectives for this project where audience members become active participants in the narrative rather than passively viewing a film. Audience members are provided with a mask which adds an element of mysteriousness and allows them to feel more immersed in the experience. The production takes place across multiple floors that are carefully designed resembling a 1930’s era hotel. Scenes from the play Macbeth play out in the rooms and the audience can roam the space and explore different areas as they interact with the environment and performers. The set up allows audiences to be immersed in the setting and piece together a narrative in their own ways
One of the most striking aspects of "Sleep No More" is its use of sensory elements to create an immersive atmosphere. They use atmospheric lighting, evocative soundscapes, and intricate set design to contribute to the overall mood and ambiance of the production. Additionally, live music performances take place throughout the space further enhance the sensory experience, adding to the sense of mystery and intrigue.
Overall, this project is successful in immersing viewers and transporting them into different realms helping them to engage and immerse in the stories. The experience challenges traditional notions of theater and storytelling.

Manchester International science festival
I remember going to the science festival a few years back and one part of the festival was an immersive experience where there were lots of science projects to engage with but I clearly remember the room and on the ceiling they projected floating letters almost like they were suspended in the air and in the background they had the Cocteau Twins playing which was really emotionally resonant, I think their choice to use dreampop really set the scene. This was a surreal and dreamlike experience I would somewhat compare to being on drugs! It was a really engaging experience that was a delight to the senses. They had a smoke machine that filled the air with atmospheric smoke that added to the immersive experience.
Meow Wolf's House of Eternal Return
This is a groundbreaking immersive art experience located in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Created by the art collective Meow Wolf, this installation transports visitors into a fantastical and otherworldly environment where reality and imagination merge.
The immersive experience takes place in a multi-story art space. The audience are greeted by a maze of corridors and hidden passageways and rooms filled with interactive exhibitions, surreal sculptures and art installations. The installations feature glowing neon forests and psychedelic pathways, dreamlike creature and every corner offers something new unique and illusory.
What stood out to me about this experience is its interactive nature. Visitors engage through touch, exploration and interaction with the exhibition, unravelling the mysteries of the space/ Along the way they are greeted by various multimedia elements such as video projections soundscapes and live performances that combine to offer a truly immersive and engaging experience.
This is a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and exploration. By blending elements of art, music, and storytelling, the experience invites visitors to let go of their inhibitions and embrace the magic of the unknown. Audiences lose themselves in a world of wonder and imagination.

4D cinemas
These experiences offer a modern and captivating way to enjoy films, going beyond traditional 2D or 3D formats. Not only do 4D cinemagoers get to watch the film on a big screen, they also get to experience real-time physical effects that match the action on screen. These senses, like motion, wind, rain, vibrations, and even smells, add to the realism and excitement of the viewing experience.
A common example of a 4D movie experience is the installation of motion-enhanced seats that synchronise with the action on screen, providing a dynamic and immersive viewing experience. For example, the synchronised movements of the seats create an immersive experience, making viewers feel like they are right in the middle of a thrilling car chase scene etc. Adding to the immersive experience, 4D movies often incorporate extra sensory effects such as bursts of fragrance, water sprays, and air blasts.
4D cinemas strive to create an immersive and captivating experience for audiences, engaging all senses and allowing active participation in the narrative. 4D theatres offer a unique and memorable movie-watching experience that combines cutting-edge technology with creative storytelling, appealing to audiences of all ages.
I aim to create a truly immersive experience for my audience, where stories come to life through the use of tactile elements, touch, and smells. I aim to craft an immersive experience that goes beyond mere film-watching, engaging the senses in a captivating way. I want an engaging and interactive experience that immerses viewers in a different realm.

Wes Anderson "The Grand Budapest Hotel" immersive experience
This project was inspired by Wes Anderson’s acclaimed film. The experience intended to recreate the whimsical world of the movie allowing the audience to step into the eccentric world of the hotel in the film.
The audience are encouraged to explore carefully crafted sets and interacts with characters inspired by the films quirky cast. They recreated the lavish rooms and opulent lobby to transport visitors into Anderson’s cinematic world. In addition to the visuals, there are sensory elements such as themed scents, sound effects and tactile props to enhance the atmospheric experience and add to the distinctive aesthetic.
Overall, the immersive experience in London offers fans of Wes Anderson's work the opportunity to immerse themselves in the enchanting world of "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and experience the magic of the film firsthand. By combining meticulous set design with sensory elements and interactive storytelling, the project aims to create an unforgettable journey through one of cinema's most beloved films.
